Cherokee National Forest - Tennessee's only National Forest In the Western United States, public domain lands were plentiful at the turn of the century to create National Forests and Parks. In the Eastern United States, growing populations had already claimed most of the land. In 1911, Congress passed the law, which allowed for the purchase of land to become National Forests. Two goals of the National Forests were to protect the watersheds and to provide a supply of timber for the increasing population. Complete Text Loudon County Community Information Loudon County is one of the youngest and geographically smallest counties. The history surrounding Loudon County relates to the name and creation of the county. In 1756, the English erected Fort Loudon on the southern bank of Little Tennessee River, near the mouth of the Tellico River. The fort’s primary purpose was to protect settlers from the French and Indian attacks. Complete Text Monroe County Information Monroe County was once called the "Cherokee Indian Territory", where the National Capital of the Indian Nation was located. The special, Chota was located near the mouth of the Tellico River on the Little Tennessee River near Fort Loudon. The Indian nation covered 40,000 square miles and had a population of 25,000. According to Cherokee law, Chota was also known as a Peace Village meaning that no blood was shed within its borders. Complete Text |
